Candle Care – How to Get the Most Out of Your Scented Candle
Share
If you love high-quality scented candles, you know the feeling:
The initial scent fills the room, the warm light immediately brings peace – and suddenly a normal evening transforms into a small ritual.
Proper candle care is crucial to ensure your candle burns beautifully for as long as possible and releases its fragrance optimally. With a few simple tips, you can not only extend the burning time but also ensure an even, clean burn.
1. The first burn is crucial
The most important moment for any candle is its first lighting.
When using your candle for the first time, let it burn until the entire surface has liquified. This prevents so-called "tunneling" – the burning of a small hole in the center.
High-quality soy wax candles, in particular, burn most beautifully when the wax can melt evenly.
Our tip:
Depending on the size of the candle, you should allow approximately 1–4 hours.
2. Trim the wick regularly
A wick that is too long can:
- Cause sooting
- Make the flame unstable
- Cause the candle to burn faster
The ideal wick length is about 5-10 mm.
It is best to carefully trim the wick before each new lighting with a wick trimmer or a small nail clipper.
This ensures the candle burns:
- More calmly
- More cleanly
- More evenly
3. Don't let candles burn too long at a time
Even if you'd love to enjoy the fragrance all evening:
More than 4 hours at a stretch is usually not ideal.
Why?
The flame gets larger over time and the wax can get too hot. This often also changes the fragrance release.
Better:
Let the candle cool down in between and light it again later.
4. Avoid drafts
Candles like calm places.
If your candle is placed:
- Next to an open window
- Directly next to the heater
- In a draft
... the flame can become unsteady and the candle will burn unevenly.
A sheltered spot, on the other hand, ensures:
- A calmer flame
- Longer burn time
- Even melting
5. Extinguish the candle correctly
Many people simply blow out candles – which often creates unnecessary smoke.
A gentler way is:
- To use a candle snuffer
- Or to briefly dip the wick into the molten wax and then straighten it again
This reduces smoke and protects the fragrance.
6. Why soy wax deserves special care
Soy wax differs significantly from classic paraffin candles.
It burns:
- Slower
- More evenly
- Often cleaner
Furthermore, soy wax is particularly valued by people who prioritize a more conscious and sustainable home due to its plant-based nature.
Therefore, proper care is all the more worthwhile – because high-quality scented candles are not just decoration, but part of a conscious feel-good atmosphere.
Small rituals make all the difference
A scented candle is often more than just a room fragrance.
It accompanies:
- Quiet evenings
- Meditations
- Journaling
- Self-care routines
- Cozy hours at home
With proper candle care, this small ritual will last especially long.
Conclusion
With a few simple habits, you can:
- Extend the life of your candle
- Improve the fragrance release
- Promote a cleaner burn
- Enjoy your moments of well-being even longer
Because good candle care primarily means one thing:
conscious enjoyment.
